It seems hard to believe but it's been a year and a half since we looked at the first Intel Core i7 processors. Back then we reviewed the Core i7 920, 940 and 965 Extreme Edition launched respectively. Although these are being phased out today by newer Core i7 930, 950 and 975 Extreme Edition models that offer a slight performance bump, the Core i7 920 for example is still priced very close to its launch list price.
This is an obvious exception to the rule for pretty much any component that's been on the market for over 12 months, and no doubt a current owner pleaser. To further augment this situation, Intel has just recently enhanced the investment that Core i7 customers made in the LGA1366 platform by providing an even more powerful upgrade alternative.
Back in 2008 when we reviewed the first batch of Core i7 processors, we noted that an upcoming architecture code-named "Westmere" would feature 6 cores and would be built using the 32nm design process. At the time it was also said that these cores would have a 12MB shared L3 cache.
Now, well over a year later, here we are with the first commercially available processor based on such architecture. The Core i7 980X Extreme features the same 32nm process used by the Clarkdale Core i3/i5 processors, and perhaps as exciting as it sounds to run 6 cores using HyperThreading (12 threads) is the fact that through a simple BIOS update this processor can be used on all existing X58 motherboards.
Even those who invested in the Core i7 platform the day it was released can now pick up a new Core i7 980X Extreme processor and enjoy the power of 6 high speed cores at their disposal. It's not going to be a cheap affair, though.
Gaming Performance
I was surprised to see any performance gains at all when comparing the Intel Core i7 980X Extreme to the Core i7 975 EE processor here. However, the larger L3 cache does appear to provide a small performance advantage in UT 3. The Core i7 Extreme was also a full 33fps faster than the Core i7 950 at 1024x768 and 36fps compared to the Core i7 920.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti Review
Earlier this month some users discovered the GeForce GTX 560 Ti when sifting through the leaked 266.44 GeForce driver. The discovery of the upcoming graphics card in itself wasn't that interesting as we all knew it was coming. What did catch our attention was the departure from traditional naming conventions by resurrecting a suffix that has been dormant since the GeForce 4 Ti 4800 and Ti 4600. Those products date as back as 2002.The GeForce 4 Ti 4200 is perhaps the most remembered product from this family. The card went down as a legendary offering due to its attractive pricing and excellent overclocking abilities.
Maybe Nvidia is trying to send a subliminal message, wanting to put their new GeForce GTX 560 Ti in a similar light to the now ancient GeForce 4 Ti 4200. Whatever the case may be, you won't hear us complaining if they decide to deliver great value on a performance oriented mainstream card.
Our friends over at Gigabyte were kind enough to send us their revision of the GeForce GTX 560 Ti, which we've put to the test against 15 other offerings in all price ranges to get you the full picture on today's GPU landscape.
ATI Radeon HD 5570 Review
It's self-evident how AMD has kept us busy over the last few months, showing us new generation GPUs aiming at all possible price points. From the performance-oriented HD 5850/5870, to the mainstream HD 5770 and the extreme dual-GPU powered HD 5970.
The budget models had to wait a bit longer. Just last week we took a look at AMD's latest GPU entry and their most affordable Radeon HD 5000 series graphics card yet. The Radeon HD 5450 is available already for $45-60, aiming to replace the HD 4350 which currently retails for as little as $35. As we quickly discovered, you shouldn't expect to play graphically intensive games with a card in this price point. With that out of the equation, the only added benefit the saw this card proposing over a modern IGP is the ability to run a triple monitor setup on the cheap with AMD's Eyefinity, and for HTPC users, HDMI bit streaming support which is built in every HD 5000 series GPU.
The Radeon HD 5570 is a more powerful GPU than the HD 5450, while retaining some of the HTPC-friendly properties that made the latter an attractive buy. Cards using this chip should remain low-profile and fairly low in the power consumption department, though a cooling fan will be the default choice to keep the GPU running cool.
On the same note, due to heavy demand from you, our readers, we have added a new set of benchmarks to this review, testing cards at this price level on gaming titles running at 720p resolution (1280x720). While we don't expect this card to revolutionize the budget GPU market, it should be interesting to see how AMD rounds out its assault on this segment. Without further ado, let's take a closer look at their latest budget GPU offering.
